Introduction

GridLock is a security application designed to simplify, speed up and increase the security of your Palm device without using text based passwords. It uses a simple 5x5 grid of squares to represent a unique pattern that is used instead of a normal text password. GridLock automatically locks the device whenever the machine is turned off, to unlock it the user taps their unique pattern onto the grid.

Benefits

The Palm range of PDAs come with a built in password protection security feature which requires entering text into the Palm to unlock it, this can be both a time consuming and frustrating business. A relatively secure password usually needs to be at least 8 characters long, which either has to be typed in using the on-screen keyboard, or via the Graffiti interface which although is generally quicker than using a keyboard, is prone to errors.

GridLock speeds up this process while maintaining a high degree of security by using a simple grid of 5x5 squares capable of over 800 billion¹ combinations. With a suitably unique grid, it is not only unfeasible to try and guess the combination it is also virtually impossible to `brute force` the grid by trying every combination.

GridLock will also display the Time and Date on the main entry screen so that you can still use your Palm to quickly look at the time without having to unlock it.

Installation

To install GridLock simply double click on the GridLock.prc file on your PC or Macintosh and perform a HotSync. Your Palm should then tell you that it needs to perform a Soft Reset to continue. This is normal behavior to prevent problems with other applications. When removing GridLock we recommend either disabling it beforehand or performing a Soft Reset immediately afterwards. We also recommend that you set a System Password in addition to using GridLock..

Setup

After clicking on the GridLock application Icon click on the -Unassigned- box next to Passgrid: to define your grid. Using the Palm`s stylus, tap on the squares to flip them from white to black (and vica versa), once you have designed a grid that you find easy to remember click the Done button at the top right of the screen. You will then be asked to verify your PassGrid by entering it again, if successful you will be taken back to the main screen. You can now activate GridLock by clicking on Enable. You can change any settings such as your Passgrid, Lock Delay etc. either before or after enabling GridLock but its usually easier to enable it last because the Palm has to be reset.

Whenever your Palm is turned off it will be automatically locked. To unlock it you will have to enter your unique Grid pattern again. Once unlocked you will have full access to the Palm until it is turned off again.

For added security please make sure that you have assigned a System Password when enabling GridLock. This is a backup measure necessary in case someone performs a Soft Reset on your machine.  In these situations GridLock may pass control onto the PalmOS built-in security. To assign a System Password click on the Security button from within GridLock, or click the Security icon from the main launcher screen.

If you forget your Passgrid then you will have to perform a Soft Reset while holding down the Page Up key. This will cause the built-in Password security screen to appear instead of GridLock. You should then be able to launch GridLock and select Reset Settings from the menu.

N.B. Early Palm devices (pre OS3.5) contained a serial link security hole that can be opened even when the machine is locked by entering a hidden Graffiti shortcut normally used for debugging purposes. GridLock will check for this hole and bring up a window asking you if you would like to have it fixed. It does this by permanently removing the offending shortcuts from your machine.

Options

In some cases you may only want to secure your Palm after a certain amount of time has elapsed, for instance you`re chatting on the phone and taking notes on the Palm, after a few minutes of inactivity your Palm will turn itself off to preserve battery life. Each time you turn it back on, you will have unlock it again. To help in this situation, GridLock has a LockDelay feature that allows you set the amount of time that the Palm has to be off before it automatically locks the device. Using this feature it is possible to turn the Palm off and on within a few minutes, without having to unlock it every time.

Selecting Reset Settings from the menu will set all settings to their default values and disable GridLock. This option is also useful if you discover any strange behavior with GridLock.

- GridLock Pro -

GridLock Pro allows each square to be either Black, Grey or White., thus increasing the number of combinations from 33 million (2^25) to over 800 billion (3^25). Tapping a square once changes it to Black, tapping again changes it to Grey and tapping once more changes it back to White.

Selecting the Show Owner Info displays a button on the bottom of the GridLock entry screen. If someone finds your Palm they can press this to display the built-in Owner Information text. We recommend setting this text to include your name and address as soon as possible by selecting Prefs->Owner from the main Application Launcher.

The Max. Fails option can be enabled to provide an extra level of security against brute force attacks, or someone trying to guess your Passgrid. When enabled GridLock will prevent anyone from unlocking your Palm after a certain amount of failed attempts. GridLock does not use an `enter-verify` type of input, i.e.. You are free to move the pen around the grid until the correct Passgrid is entered, therefore a failed attempt is registered when any number of squares are set and then the grid is totally cleared. When the user is down to the last try a warning will appear, after one more fail GridLock will permanently lock the machine and display only the Owner Information (if selected) or a message saying the machine is locked.

The Size option allows you to change the size of the Grid to Large, Medium or Small. Reducing the size of the Grid can be used to help prevent people from looking at your Passgrid while you enter it.

Compatibility

GridLock is compatible with all Palm devices ranging from OS3 to OS5.

We have tested GridLock with a number of other applications and Hackmaster hacks for security and compatibility. Some Hacks that bring up Popup windows, such as TealLaunch may continue to activate even while inside the GridLock startup screen. However, GridLock will not exit until a valid Grid has been entered, therefore it is not possible to switch to another Application while in GridLock. If you find any incompatibilities with other Applications/Hacks please let us know as soon as possible.

Emergencies

If for some reason another application causes problems with GridLock, or if GridLock itself becomes unable to start up, there a few things to try;

1. Read the GridLock F.A.Q at http://www.pdabusiness.com/gridlock

- or -

2. If you can unlock your Palm, delete GridLock and reinstall it.

- or -

3. Place a pin in the small hole at the back of the machine. This wall cause a Soft Reset. It will not erase any data but it will clear temporary memory and restart all applications.

- or -

4. Do the same as 2. but while inserting the pin, keep the Cursor UP key pressed down. This will Soft Reset the machine and prevent any applications from restarting. You should be presented with the built-in Security Password screen..

- or -

5. Last resort, WARNING: THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA. Place a pin in the hole and keep the Cursor Down key pressed. After doing this, perform a HotSync to reinstall your applications and data.
