The ability to read music is an essential part of a music curriculum, however, it is a skill mainly built by repetition. NoteTrain is a program for the Palm PDA designed to teach the name and pitch of the notes on the musical staff. Notes from both the treble and bass clefs can be displayed and tested.
NoteTrain has two modes of operation: Learn mode allows the student to select the note and then both displays the note on the musical staff and plays the corresponding sound. In Test mode, NoteTrain selects the notes, plays and displays them, and then waits for the student to identify the note. Each tested note is scored and visual feedback is given to show whether the identification was correct or not.
NoteTrain uses the piano keyboard as a familiar metaphor for selecting the notes, however, especially when the keyboard keys are labeled, it’s use is not piano specific.
In Learn mode, NoteTrain lets the student play simple tunes and can
provide a break from drills with random notes.
