 TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION

APPLICATION NOTES
=================

Expense
-------
Palm Desktop software 4.1 includes a new Expense application.
This desktop application synchronizes expense data with the
corresponding handheld application provided on many Palm-branded
devices.

Users without a handheld expense application can simply use the
desktop expense application by itself.

You can also hide the Expense application: Right-click the
Expense icon and select Hide Expense.

Note Pad
--------
Palm Desktop software 4.1 includes an updated version of the
desktop Note Pad application. The new version is compatible with
versions 2.0 and earlier of the handheld Note Pad application
provided on several Palm-branded devices.

Users without a handheld Note Pad application can hide this
application: Right-click the Note Pad icon and select Hide Note
Pad.

E-mail Conduit
--------------
The installation package for Palm Desktop software 4.1 does not
include a mail conduit. Existing mail conduits (from Palm or
other software providers) are retained during the installation
process.

INSTALLATION
============

Instructions
------------
Follow these steps to install Palm Desktop software 4.1:

Note: If you are currently using Palm Desktop software, first read
the section below titled "Upgrading from an earlier version of
Palm Desktop software."

1. Download and run the installer (PalmDesktop41ENG.exe).
2. At the first dialog box, select a location where you want the
files to be expanded. Do not delete these files.
3. Click Next and follow the installer prompts to conclusion.
4. If you have run this installer previously, it may ask for
confirmation whether it should overwrite the existing files.
Answer Yes if this prompt appears.
5. If the installer requests that the system should be restarted,
   answer Yes to do so.

Changes from previous releases
------------------------------
Compared to earlier releases of Palm Desktop software, this version
has several differences:

- It is built with Microsoft Installer technology, which enables the
software to be silently installed or installed with command line
  options.
- For a new install, the software is installed into
c:\Program Files\Palm (rather than the old default location
  c:\Palm).
- For an upgrade install, the software is installed in
  the previous location.
- After an uninstall, the Palm user data and any 3rd-party conduit
  software is retained.

System requirements
-------------------
Palm Desktop software is qualified to work correctly on any of
the following Microsoft operating systems:

 Windows 95, OSR2 or later (v4.00.950B or later) *
 Windows 98 (including 98SE)
 Windows Me
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, SP6 or higher
 Windows 2000 Professional
 Windows XP Home
 Windows XP Professional

Palm recommends that users keep their Windows system software up
to date with the latest service packs and updates. Microsoft
Windows Update can automatically perform these upgrades:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

In addition, Internet Explorer (4.01 SP2 or higher) is also
required. Internet Explorer can be downloaded from Microsoft's
web site: http://www.microsoft.com/ie/

* For Windows 95, HotSync Manager software requires the Windows
Socket 2 Update from Microsoft. To update a Windows 95 system
with the Windows Socket 2 Update, visit the Microsoft web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/

Administrative rights
---------------------
When installing on a multi-user operating system (Windows NT,
2000, or XP), Palm Desktop installer should be run from an
account with administrative privileges.

Compatibility with Palm OS(R) handhelds
---------------------------------------
This release of Palm Desktop software is 100% compatible with
existing handheld products manufactured by Palm, Inc.

For information about using Palm Desktop software with Palm OS
handhelds from Palm's licensees or OEM partners, please contact
the manufacturer directly.

Upgrading from an earlier version of Palm Desktop software
----------------------------------------------------------
You must uninstall your current version of Palm Desktop software
before you install this new version if you are using one of the
following:
- Palm Desktop 1.0
- Palm Desktop 2.0
- Palm Desktop for IBM WorkPad (any version)

In all other cases, the Install Program automatically detects an
earlier version of Palm Desktop software and updates the system
files appropriately.

Configuring HotSync Manager for serial communication
----------------------------------------------------
If you install onto a Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP machine,
HotSync Manager may not be configured for performing HotSync
operations over a serial port. If your cradle is connected to a
serial port, you must configure HotSync Manager to use a serial
port. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click the HotSync Manager icon in the Windows system tray.
-- If there is a check mark next to the 'Local Serial' menu item,
then HotSync Manager is already configured.
-- If there is not a check mark, click 'Local Serial'.
2. Click the HotSync Manager icon again and select Setup;
click the Local tab and select the appropriate serial port.

For more information, refer to the user manual that came with
your handheld.

Microsoft Outlook synchronization
---------------------------------
Palm includes the Chapura PocketMirror software with some Palm
handheld products. PocketMirror supports synchronization directly
between your handheld and Microsoft Outlook, but PocketMirror
does not synchronize with Palm Desktop software.

Therefore, if you want to synchronize with Microsoft Outlook, DO
NOT install Palm Desktop software from the Web. Instead, run the
Palm Desktop installer from the CD that came with your handheld
and select the option "Synchronize with Microsoft Outlook" when
the choice appears.

TROUBLESHOOTING
===============

Windows XP support
------------------
Palm Desktop software 4.1 provides improved support for Windows
XP, but be aware of the following limitations:

- Fast User Switching is not supported. To switch between
different users on a Windows XP system, select Log Out rather
than Switch User. (Alternatively, quit Palm Desktop software and
HotSync Manager before switching users.)

- Palm's USB driver does not have a digital signature. Windows
may display a confirmation dialog box for permission to install a
driver that has not been digitally signed. Answer Yes to this
confirmation dialog.

- Upgrading to Windows XP may require driver reinstallation. When
upgrading an older system (e.g., Windows Me or 2000) to Windows
XP, the Palm USB driver may cease to function. To resolve this
issue, run the Palm Desktop Setup program again.

Setting proper video mode for best performance
----------------------------------------------
For best results when running the Palm Desktop software, set your
video mode as follows:

  Resolution: 800 x 600 pixels (or higher)
Color palette: High Color (also called 16-bit or 65536-color
                 mode) or higher
  Font size: Small Fonts

To change display settings:

1. Click the Windows Start menu, and then select Settings.
2. Select Control Panel.
3. Double-click Display, and then click the Settings tab.
4. Change the color and display area settings to the values
   given above.

If your system is set to less than 256-color mode, Palm Desktop
software will not be installed.

Large fonts are not supported. The software still works
correctly, but there may be some cosmetic issues.

vCard/vCal exchange with other software applications
----------------------------------------------------
Palm Desktop software includes support for the vCard and vCal
standards for exchanging addresses and events, respectively.
Currently, the software supports the vCard 2.1 and vCal 1.0
formats.

When Palm Desktop software has a problem importing a vCard or
vCal file, an error or warning message appears. Some common
messages and their meanings are described below.

Message: "An error occurred while importing the vCard file. The
file may not be a valid vCard file or it may contain too many
entries."

This message appears if (1) the vCard is written in a format
newer than 2.1, or (2) it is improperly formatted. Some
applications (like Lotus Organizer) have a configuration
setting to support writing the 2.1 format. If possible,
  change the application's settings accordingly.

Message: "An error occurred while importing the vCal file. The
file may not be a valid vCal file."

This message appears if (1) the vCal is written in a format
newer than 1.0, or (2) it is improperly formatted.

Message: "Cannot handle multi-day events. Converted to Untimed
event."

Events that span multiple days are not directly supported by
Palm Desktop software. If an imported vCal file contains such
an event, it is converted to a single untimed event on the first
  day of the multi-day event.
