WordSmith - synchronizes and integrates with Microsoft Word so that desktop documents can easily be transferred to your Zodiac console. INSTALLATION ============ Instructions ------------ Make sure that you have quit all open applications prior to running the Palm Desktop installation. Follow these steps to install the Zodiac Desktop software. Note: If you are currently using Palm Desktop software, first read the section below titled "Upgrading from an earlier version of Palm Desktop software." 1. Insert CD into CD-ROM drive. 2. If CD does not run automatically, double-click autorun.exe on the CD. 3. Follow the installer prompts to conclusion. 4. If the installer requests that the system should be restarted, answer Yes to do so. Upgrading from an earlier version of Palm Desktop software ---------------------------------------------------------- 1. Before proceeding with these steps, perform a HotSync operation with your old handheld. 2. We recommend that you then create a backup copy of your data files found in the Palm folder on your desktop computer. You will most likely find the PALM folder in the directory C:\PALM\ or C:\Program Files\PALM\ Simply copy (not move) all the files within the PALM directory to another directory to create a backup. For example, \PALM_backup\. 3. You must install the version of desktop software included with your Zodiac console. This version contains important applications and desktop synchronization software necessary for certain software included with the Zodiac console. NOTE: If your previous copy of the desktop software included software extensions for Note Pad or Expense, these extensions are not compatible with Zodiac but we have left them so that the data from this software will still be available on your previous device that supports these extensions. Additional upgrade information is available at http://support.tapwave.com. Note: In some PC configurations, dialog boxes may appear behind other dialog boxes during the installation process. If this occurs, you can continue the installation process by hitting Alt- Tab on the keyboard or selecting the flashing application in the task bar, in order to bring the hidden dialog boxes forward. UNINSTALLING DESKTOP SOFTWARE ============================= By default, the desktop installer also installs WordSmith desktop software and Kinoma Producer software for Windows. To remove these components, access the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs. WordSmith and Kinoma can then be selected for removal. System requirements ------------------- The Zodiac desktop software is qualified to work correctly on any of the following Microsoft operating systems: Windows 98 (including 98SE) Windows Me Windows 2000 Professional Windows XP Home Windows XP Professional Tapwave recommends that users keep their Windows system software up to date with the latest service packs and updates. Microsoft Windows Update can automatically perform these upgrades: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ In addition, Internet Explorer (4.01 SP2 or higher) is also required. Internet Explorer can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site: http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ Administrative rights --------------------- When installing on a multi-user operating system (Windows XP, or 2000), the Zodiac desktop software must be installed to an account with Administrative privileges. Compatibility with other Palm OS(R) devices ------------------------------------------- For information about using Palm Desktop software with Palm OS handhelds from Palm's licensees or OEM partners, please contact the manufacturer of the other Palm OS device. TROUBLESHOOTING =============== Support for Older Applications ------------------------------ Some older applications may not function properly because they were not designed to support all the features available in your new Zodiac console. Check with the developer of any 3rd party software to see if they support the Zodiac console. Application menubar shortcuts with Graffiti 2 --------------------------------------------- Graffiti(R) 2 introduces two-stroke characters. However, application menu shortcuts would be recognized on the first stroke. Some applications do not support using Graffiti 2 for accessing menu commands. Power Adapters -------------- Use only certified Tapwave(TM) power adapters with your console. Use of unauthorized power adapters may result in damage to your console and voids the warranty. Recharging problems ------------------- When you attach your console to the cable, the power button should illuminate, indicating the battery is charging. A green light indicates full charge. If the power button does not illuminate, the battery might not be charging. Check the following: 1. Confirm that the console is properly connected in the cable. 2. Confirm that the charger cable is properly connected to the back of the USB connector that plugs into your computer. 3. Confirm that your charger is plugged into an AC outlet that has power. 4. Alternatively, you can connect the charger cable directly to the Zodiac console using the same connector normally used by the sync cable. Expansion Card Notes -------------------- To prevent data corruption or accidental damage to an expansion card, wait for the device to completely finish writing to the expansion card before removing the card from the expansion card slot. You must perform an initial HotSync operation with your console before you can install applications onto an expansion card. The HotSync operation notifies the desktop synchronization software that the console has expansion card slots that can be used as the destination for installed applications and files. Some expansion cards are read-only, preventing the installation of applications or data onto those cards. Writable expansion cards have a write-protect latch on the expansion card. Set it to the appropriate state to install or copy to the expansion card. If using a SD/MMC card reader to install files to the expansion card, please make sure they are installed under the following directories for the associated handheld applications to recognize them. A HotSync operation will also install the following file types to these directories on an expansion card: .prc /PALM/Launcher/ .pdb /PALM/Launcher/ .jpg /DCIM/ .jpeg /DCIM/ .mp3 /AUDIO/ Windows XP support ------------------ The Zodiac desktop software provides support for Windows XP, but be aware of the following limitations: - Fast User Switching is not supported. To switch between different users on a Windows XP system, select Log Out rather than Switch User. (Alternatively, quit Palm Desktop software and HotSync Manager before switching users.)
